NDEAM: SEMP employee thrives in customer service role

(October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, so we’re shining a spotlight on some of the wonderful people with disabilities who work with us.)

Gabe’s offers “big deals on the best brands every day,” as well as an exceptional cashier by the name Kelly Leys.

Kelly, a standout in sasi’s Supported Employment Program, has been bringing smiles to customers faces for more two years, making her mark not only through her work ethnic but also her outstanding customer service.

Kelly’s day-to-day responsibilities include scanning items, bagging purchases, and assisting customers with price checks and returns. Despite facing occasional challenges, like handling returns without price tags or busy lines, she approaches each situation with a positive attitude.

“I like it a lot. It’s a really fun experience,” she said, adding that she finds joy in helping shoppers.

An important aspect of her role is her ability to connect with customers.

“My favorite part of the job is seeing everybody really happy, enjoying themselves,” she said.

This connection is mutual, as customers often ask for Kelly when she is off, a testament to the great relationships she has built with them.

Kelly’s success story is even more inspiring considering her journey. After being unemployed for seven years, she received job readiness training and found her niche at Gabe’s.

“Cashing is a very challenging job, and not everyone is able to do it,” said Lynn Conrad, Kelly’s job trainer. “Kelly jumped right in.”

Beyond her work, Kelly is passionate about various creative pursuits, including writing, painting, and collecting dolls. She also runs a YouTube channel where she reviews American Girl Dolls, showcasing her artistic talent and interests, all while balancing being a homeowner and a dedicated employee.

Importantly, Kelly advocates for individuals with disabilities, highlighting that they can find fulfilling employment without sacrificing their Social Security benefits.

“You can earn quite a bit of money and still keep your Social Security,” she said, aiming to inspire others to pursue their career goals.

As Kelly continues to thrive at Gabe’s, her positivity and commitment to her work serve as reminders of the profound impact one person can have in their community, and how, in return, a community can uplift and inspire that same individual.

“Gabe’s is very lucky to have her,” Lynn said, speaking for the many who appreciate Kelly’s presence in the store.
