Brief History of SASi

SASi (Suburban Adult Services, Inc.) is a not for profit organization dedicated to providing physically and mentally challenged individuals with programs and services that will enable them to lead meaningful lives and be as independent as possible.

Established in 1975, SASi has grown from a small community based agency to one of the largest service providers in Western New York. Our programs include employment training and placement, clinical and habilitation services, twenty-four hour residential care facilities, service coordination, recreation and therapeutic horsemanship.

While the growth of the agency has been exceptional, in the number of consumers, staff and facilities, SASi has been able to maintain its high standard of care to its service recipients. In the winter of 2004, SASi moved it's administrative offices to Elma, NY. While serving as the agency's corporate headquarters, the facility also offers a unique and functionally designed state-of-the-art Article 16 Clinic and Day Habilitation Center.

SASi Individual Residential Alternatives (IRAs) offer individuals with developmental disabilities a greater sense of freedom and independence, while providing a clean and safe living environment that they are proud to call home.

With locations throughout Erie County, Cattaraugus County, and Wyoming County, IRA’s offer a full-range of services including: nursing, behavior supports, nutritional supports, recreation, and social supports. All services are designed to develop skills, emphasize individuality and identify goals, while respecting and accommodating each individual's choice and preferences.

All sites have a committed team of staff and management to ensure a high quality of care and to provide the individuals with support and supervision. SASI staff members provide training to enhance the skills and abilities of each individual. The individuals and staff are involved in daily activities such as meal preparation, housekeeping, self-care tasks, shopping and community activities.

SASi is open to suggestions from both individuals and families on the development of individualized and custom living arrangements. Please do not hesitate to approach us with any individual or group ideas for home developments.

High Hurdles

The High Hurdles therapeutic riding program offers cognitively, emotionally and physically challenged individuals a unique opportunity for growth and development. Instructors, students, horses and volunteers work together to achieve challenging yet attainable horsemanship goals. Learning to care for and about horses while mastering riding skills is what High Hurldles is all about.

As a Special Olympics Training Center, High Hurdles also provides riders the availability to train and compete within the Special Olympics Program.

Individuals who are at least 3 years old and who are physically, emotionally or cognitively challenged are eligible to participate in the High Hurdles Program. We encourage students to reach their highest potential through individualized riding plans. Adaptive equipment that meets the therapeutic needs of each individual may also be used.
