On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, individuals receiving support from both sasi and People Inc. completed a six-week course designed to provide them with the skills to become a member of an agency’s Board of Directors or other agency-wide Committee.
Throughout the course, participants talked about how to be a self advocate, how to solve problems, common rules and customs for board meetings, listening skills, and in closing, held a practice board member to further prepare them for future memberships.
“I’m very, very proud of myself. I did it,” said course graduate Molly Brunner. “I’m still looking for a board to join, but am excited for when I finally decide.”
Molly said she enjoyed the class and would encourage others people to take it as well. “I learned about my rights, and speaking up for myself,” she said.
Course graduate Elliott Mesa-Duell also enjoyed the class.
“It was really interesting to be a part of,” he said. “Graduating was great, and I’m excited to know that I’m able to be a part of authorized boards and committees.”
At the graduation, each participant was presented with an OPWDD Board Training Certificate of Achievement by sasi Executive Vice President of Quality and Community Services Barb Lamoreaux and OPWDD Region 1 Deputy Director Kevin Penberthy.
