Suburban Adult Services, Inc. (SASi) announces the receipt of a $5,000 grant from Independent Health of Buffalo, to support the launch of its Adaptive Fitness Program in West Seneca to benefit those with physical and developmental disabilities living in Western New York.

SASi, a human services agency supporting individuals with special needs since 1975, announced plans to open its Adaptive Fitness Center this July on Union Road, West Seneca, inside the Southgate Plaza. Helping to turn this vision into reality, SASi recently received notice from Independent Health that it would receive a $5,000 award in support of this unique program.

“We are very grateful to Independent Health for their support. Having a partnership with such a well-respected health and wellness organization will add credibility to the program and may help leverage other funding” says Program Director Sheila Dollas. Dollas is also the founder and director of Moving Miracles therapeutic dance, where the fitness program will be located.

Dollas explains that though the benefits of becoming fit are universal for those with or without disabilities, opportunities to participate in a program catering to these individuals’ goals and abilities can be rare. Avoiding exercise increases the risks of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, fatigue and obesity, ultimately having the potential to limit their independence and even their quality of life.

“We are recognizing the movement to making health and wellness an important part of daily life…for all of us,” says Dollas. “Independent Health has been wonderful in not only offering monetary support to this project, but also in offering access to their clinical services and other resources.”
